Medical Center
Half our home. Truth is it is time to admit and accept that the hospital is our second home. I am still optimistic that once all 3 surgeries we will only come for check ups and nothing more.
We were scheduled to come in Oct. 17 for a catheter. Frida likes to come ahead of schedule or else its God's way of making sure our little one stays alive. We came in the ER this past Sunday and it is time for her next open heart surgery. They scheduled her catheter sooner and said her OHS (open heart surgery) would follow right after.. Frida would need to just recover and then after recovery of OHS we could come home. we would be here 3 weeks or at most a month.
Well that's not the plan anymore. These past few days were really really hard. Frida has a bacteria that entered her blood which now she has an infection. Doctors have searched everywhere or tried their best. You will understand in a little. Background info/summary; Frida got 3 blood cultures positive for infection. So that means it is not a mistake or was contaminated, she has an infection. What is really odd is that she shows no symptoms and by no symptoms I mean none! No fever, her white cell count is not elevated, and shes acting normal. The one thing everyone kept asking was if her vision/ eye contact has changed. Yall!! That is not something one wants to hear at all. The reasoning is that if the infection is in the heart it pumps blood everywhere and one of the first places is eye and brain. Dont get me started if there is an infection in the heart, first off she only has half. Good news is that an eye doctor came and no bacteria in the eyes so no bacteria in the brain. As of now we are just waiting to see if there is another blood clot in her extremities (arms and legs) because that is usually where this bacteria likes to be at and slowly grow. This is the short version.
you may be asking how do you treat this... Well its a 6 week long therapy of antibiotics that can only be through IV. They cannot do any operations or procedures until these 6 weeks are done. That being said no catheter until maybe 6 weeks later. We will be in the hospital for a while, a long while. Also because its a type of staff infection only a very few (aka 3) antibiotics work for this specific type of bacteria. Yall I felt like I didnt know what to do or which way to turn. I felt like I was starting to lose it but as each hour/ day went on the updates weren't as scary.
Good news is that she is ok, no symptoms, and no pain. She is comfortable and is on oxygen. The whole team is letting her have what she wants. She wants more oxygen she can, she needs less then shes got it. Frida Sofia is very loved and cared for here. I just pray that this antibiotic treatment works. I want us to be home together having the most normal life as possible.
